In this sportscasting business, one of the great pleasures is the social aspect. For me, getting out under the sun to meet different people week-to-week beats staring at the same, stale walls of a cubicle each and every tedious day.
Covering sports for a living, you meet people who are truly blessed with superior gifts. These men or women, for obvious reasons, are often some of the most enjoyable to watch as they perform their trade. Other times, however, you meet people, perhaps only marginally gifted, at best, yet through a pure and insatiable love for their sport, they manage to do some pretty remarkable things.
A few weeks back, I finally got around to meeting and doing a story on a high school wide receiver here in Jackson, Mississippi, who is very much the latter. Deonte Johnson has overcome challenges most never encounter since birth. He's a role player on his high school football team, who plays a role maybe more important to his Callaway High team than anyone else. You can click here to see what I mean.
